Daily assignment: The Labor Day's Celebration

The Labor Day's Celebration

Generally, labor day is the celebration or anniversary of all workers in the world. It takes place different days according to countries. It is a special occasion for all workers to express their excitement and joy due to the hard working during the hole year.
Countries celebrate it differently. In the United Sates, there is not special event. The only difference is that the day is off for almost all companies and schools. Those which are very busy sometimes make their employees work that day and get the double rate. No party is organized, people just stay at home watching movies or go shopping in operated stores. Although students are not workers, all schools are closed.
In Cameroon and in many other African countries, that event is celebrated every May, first of the year. Topic: My Favorite Season

Although some countries have many seasons, Cameroon which is located in the equatorial
zone has only two majors seasons which are dry season from November to March and the raining season that goes from April to October.
My favorite season is the dry season during which most activities can be done. Most of the time, I usually like to travel during that season because at that time, the weather is nice. My country doesn't have enough tared roads and in raining season, roads are in very bad condition. They are full of mud and cars are not able to circulate properly. So traveling that time and especially in rural zone where there are not good roads become very difficult. It sometimes takes one or two days to travel from one province to another. Because most markets are built in open area, it is so difficult to go shopping and also, traders perform poorly on business during that period. In dry season, every activity can be done. Traveling, shopping, and doing outdoor activities become very exciting and easy. Especially, I like to go the football stadium on dry season because I may not be waited. In my country, since I didn't have the mean of transportation, walking to school was very pleasant in dry season. During that period, there are not natural disasters such as flooding, storm, hurricane, and tornado.
In conclusion, dry season is the best season because it is the one during which the majority of activities can be done and the climate is suitable for many people.

Road Transportation in Cameroon (central Africa)

Among many problems that face African countries, road transportation seems to be the most important. In urban area, moving by taxi is difficult. There are not enough roads and those that exist are in very poor condition. Because fewer people are car owners, motorcyclists today play the taxi drivers' role. the non intervention of the government on the public transportation has increased the rate of accidents to 60%.
Many streets are crowded of the " motor taxi" who are people that use motorcycles in transportation. Some of them, inexperienced and without any driver license are involved in many accidents. They sometimes carry more than two people and it is pretty dangerous. Many people prefer taking a motorcycle instead of taxi pretending that it less expensive and in addition the motorcyclist can drop them right at their house while a taxi can't. Most of the time there is a real battle between taxi drivers and motorcyclists. The taxi men complain because although the government make them paying heavy taxes, they don't have anymore customers; the motorcyclists who do not pay any tax take their customers for half price.
Inter city transportation is made by buses and cars. Due to the poor condition and the lack of roads, traveling from one city to another is so difficult especially in the raining season. Almost 75% of roads are not tarred. Thus a trip during the dry season is not pleasant because of dust and in addition traveling in raining season in the worst. It some time takes two to three days to move from one city to another. Without a four wheel-drive car, it will be practically impossible to drive in some areas. Usually buses used are in very poor condition because they are not properly maintain and also drivers do not respect the load which is allowed to be carried.
In conclusion, transportation is a serious problem in poor countries due to many factors. If the governments don't think deeply about that dramatic situation, African countries will become more and more poorer.

Topic: Online activities

Everywhere around the world, people are gaining the ability to the Internet use. Today more
people are using computers to go online. This new technology is increasing time to time. For example, in 1980, there were fewer Internet users in Europe. Just ten years after, the number of Internet user has been multiply by eight. So far the Internet technology has grew by 300% over the time. In fact that new technology is affecting many lives and it is changing how we can communicate, but are those changes good or bad?
The Internet can be a great tool of communication. Everyone believe that. We use it to shop online, keep in touch with friends whether they are far or not. Long time ago, sending a letter use to take a lot of time, two to three months according to the distance before the receiver gets it. Sending a message today on the Internet takes only a few seconds and in addition, it is cheaper since you don't need a stamp nor envelope. Would you like to quickly get an information about sport, politic or general news, the easier way is going online. To day many lovers find their friends online either they are far or not. Anyway the Internet is the way to go.
However, many people believe that instead of solving problems, the Internet has created many. Some of them state that it is taking people away from their families and friends: People can no more be close to their relatives but very far distant. Many researchers think that today, the use of the Internet is negatively affecting the youth since they are able to download programs which are not allow to teenagers such as pornography movies, horrors movies and so on. Online people can secretly have information about others and it is dangerous.
In conclusion, the Internet use has simplify many people's way of life. The dream has become a reality. The world is now reduced as a small city in the planet. For some Internet critics, it negative effects are so enormous that its use should not longer be benefit to human being.

Topic: My Favorite Vacation

In the year 2004, When I was still in my home country, I had an amazing vacation. It was
in Cameroon, on December when the company where I was working gave me one month vacation. So I decided to spend it in another city with my uncle in the North province. It was very far from my city and the trip took one day long. For the first time, I traveled by train. It was boring because the train was too noisy and some passengers quarreled during all the trip, arguing about the seat. We reached later in the night and my uncle was waiting for me at the train station. He welcomed me and we went home. That city was smaller than mine .
The first week, I was offset because the climate was unpleasant: very cold in the morning and very hot in the afternoon. Gradually, I became familiar with it and started enjoying it. On Sunday, my uncle took me to the zoo which was the most important of the country and for the first time, I watched the biggest wild animals. The most fraten ones were the lions, tigers, elephant s, the logest snake, and some other kind of animals that I have ever seen. I was very scare when I saw a big monkey walking toward us but they told me to be quiet because they seldom attack a person. We went to the river and I saw water falling from the montain into the valley; it was very intersting and there were many torists taking pictures. Down side in the river, crocodiles and fish were swiming. The second week, we also visited other famous places such as the national "musee" and the greatest lac of the city. By the time I went back in my city, I had enjoyed living my uncle so that I did not longer want to leave.
Finally, that vacation was special for me because when I ever remember it , I am so excieted and would like to visit those famous places again.

Topic: Importance Of Having Good Automobile Tires

If you have ever had a blowout while driving, you should know to do. Blowout can be a frighten experience especially when you are driving at a high speed. If it happens, the first thing to do is to hold very tightly the steering wheel. Failure to do like that may result in losing control of your car and make a serious accident. You will not attempt to apply the brakes immediately if you have a blowout. Try to slow down and get out of the road after giving signal to the other cars so that they will not hit you. If you succeed stopping cautiously, the next thing is to park your you car in a convenient place and change the bad tire.
Tires often blowout because they are too old and also due to an excessive and uncontrolled air pressure. Most automobiles drivers always check the gas and engine oil in their car, but they seldom check important thing like air pressure. In Africa, stupid drivers seldom buy new tires. They always buy used tires imported from Europe because they are cheaper but forgetting that something which is cheap can be more expensive because not only it will not stay longer but also it can cause serious accident like used tires. In this way, drivers must check frequently the tires' surface, bring the car to the mechanic do tire alignment and rotate them as well as possible. When their surface is already smooth he should replace them immediately with the new tires because old tires likely slide on the road whenever the driver applies the brakes, the car will not stop and accident may happen.
In conclusion, driving with old tires is pretty dangerous due to problems that it can cause. It should be recommended to automobiles owners to regularly check their tires and make sure that they are in very good shape.

Title: Wining Elections in Poor countries

Corruption is one of the causes of poverty and many countries in Africa are concerned. In those countries, most presidents are illegally elected and they do not respect human rights. When there is election, they manipulate votes because they can intimidate the population with the army. During the registration period, they do not allow the opposition leaders to register their candidates and also, they do not let them participate to the campaign. By the time the elections approach, all opposition candidates are intimidated because they will probably vote against the ruling party. When the result appears, the ruling party must surely win since it has manipulated the votes. In many countries, the civil war often occurs due to the fact that the government has not respected other people's opinion. As the illegal voted president corrupted all army and the other forces of law, all political leaders who do not respect the law should be severely punished. At once the illegal president takes the power, he could steal the money and other country's properties like he wants and keep in foreign countries. In Africa, most presidents like to die in power because they are afraid to be judged by their predecessors for all what they have committed if they lose the elections.

Title: A Scary Encounter

As T was sitting near the river side
Spring beautiful amazing birds were singing
A breeze was blowing dangerously beside
I couldn't imagine risks I was facing

The animals in large numbers came
The river's noise was higher than the storm
Returning home was bad and shame
The trees with large branches were worm

The worst occurred when I listened to the noise
It was a human being's voice as I guessed
That evening, why was Paul making such noise?
When I discovered him I was depressed

As I took courage, went toward him and asked
Are you a republican? Can you Skate?

Topic: The Best Day Of My Life

I will never forget the precious day that I won my first scholarship in high school. It was in my home country(Cameroon) in 2001. That previous year, I had been working so hard and at the end of the the semester, I got a successful score of 96%. So I was promoted with the other clever students to the next level. I was so excited and so did my parents. The following year, I started the first semester with determination to do well as I always do. One day, at the end of the semester, the head master came in our classroom and informed us that the list of the scholarship winners was available in his office.
We went there to check the list. I was a little scare but with surprise, I saw my name between the fifteen names. Wow ! I shouted and jumped until my head knocked the ceiling. I couldn't believe. We went back in the classroom but thirty minutes later, I returned to the office in order to make sure that the name I saw was my real name. Of cause, it was mine.
Wining 40.000francs(equivalent of 80 American dollars) was a real dream. I had never had that opportunity. When I went back home, I couldn't sleep that Friday night and my family too. One week later, our school's head master gave me the check that I cashed and saved to buy my school supplies, uniform, and tuition for the next year. I was the first person in my family to win a scholarship. My father congratulated me and recommended to my junior brothers to follow that example by studying seriously at school.
In conclusion, Friday 10/15/01 is the best day of my life because when I think of it, I still dream to see how cheerful I was after wining a sum of money that i had ever had.

Topic: The Invasion of Alien Species

In many parts of the world, alien species are harming the environment causing many problems. Generally, alien species in term of animals are species that moved from their original area to a new place. Sometimes, they arrive accidentally or they can be introduced by human being in order to fight other species. At once they are introduced, they multiply dramatically. Over the time, sometimes decade, sometimes a few years. The invaded species take living space and food away from the native plants or animals. The result can mean drastic change in the natural landscape and problems for people.
As example, the yellow ants are an alien species introduced in Cameroon forty years ago. Today the result is terrible because of their harmfulness to people, other animals and ants. According to many investigators, they may be coming from Europe inside some used car tires. Other believed that they came from Asia inside some used shoes and clothes. At the begining, they were just a few creatures however, they grew and multiplied exponentially. Today it is a serious problem for the government that spends at leas more than one million dollar every year to fight them but unsuccessfully. Not only they attack and destroy other kinds of ants but also they harmfully bite human being. At once you are bitten by one you will feel very pain the whole day and children bitten may end up at the hospital where they will have intensive care.
At the begining they taught that killing them with toxic chemical spray will solve the problem but today not only they have become more resistant to the chemicals but also those substances are a source of contamination for people.
According to some scientists, another type of alien species is the mongoose. Those small animals were brought to Hawaii in the 1800's to kill rats in sugarcane fields. Since then, they have grown in number so that they are a major threat to bird life on the island. their favorite food is birds' eggs. Thus the mongoose has caused a lot money worth of damage to poultry farmers in Hawaii, and it has great reduced the numbers of many native bird species.
Although many people believe that alien species are beneficial for human being, their damages are more harmful than their utility.

Topic: Kangaroo, The Exciting Animals

The white kangaroo seems to be the favorite of children and animals lovers throughout the world. For many years there have been many species of kangaroo in Cameroon. They lived in the forest and in bushes. Kangaroo used to be common in other areas. However, as the human population increased and the forest dramatically destroyed, kangaroos territory gradually disappeared. And so did the kangaroos. Now the Cameroonian government has created a number of "kangaroo reserves" to protect them. When I was still back in my country, although the government had prohibited the destruction forest reserve, I sometimes go hunting with my uncle. Gazelles, monkeys and kangaroos were our favor animals. I especially like the kangaroo's meat because it is so nice, easy to cook and also my grand father always told me that when you eat it frequently, not only you live longer but also you become smart, healthier, fact and you can be stronger as a buffalo. Although kangaroos are not domestic animals, my neighbor used to raise some. For the whole first year of its life, the kangaroo baby is completely dependent on its mother. The newborn kangaroo is a tiny, helpless little creature. At birth, its eyes remain closed for three or four weeks. They develop fairly slowly compared to most animals. The babies are completely dependent on their mother for a long time. In fact, they even begin to walk until they are about five months old. The only food they can eat at least a year is their mother's milk. Although kangaroos are not harmful animals, I have seen a kangaroo pushing my neighbor's child and take his food.
Kangaroos are exciting and amazing animals. Even though all species are face of extinction, their meat is the one to taste. A person who tries it will not regret.

Topic:Lungs Diseases

In many poor and industrialized countries, tuberculosis, asthma, lung cancer and other and other heart attack are serious problem. The high consumption of of cigarettes has gradually damaged human health. Although in Cameroon(Africa) only prostitutes women smoke, smoking in the United Stated has become a real pleasure. Americans ladies smoke more than men. Experts have demonstrated that a pregnant lady can likely transmit the disease to the fetus, but women don't care about it. I still remember the day that I was burnt with a cigarette fire by a girl at work because I told her that even it a lady shines like gold, but smokes, I will never be in love with her. That girl said that I was crazy and stupid and she burnt me because she was smoking.
In industrialized countries, not only cigarettes are the essential sources of disease but also the air pollution of the ozone released by automobiles exhausts has created other dangerous illness like asthma. When a person suffers of that disease, the bronchial tubes that bring air to the lungs become blocked and it becomes very difficult to breathe. Beside this problem, if the patient is an alcoholic addict the situation will become more complicated. Generally those people are in very bad shape characterized with the loss of weigh, yellow nails and teeth, black lips. They are always weak and unable to run for a long distance. Their bones become flexible, their blood is not more purified, their nerves not flexible can easily brake. So after an accident, if they are not quickly rescued they can lose all their blood and died.
Since the excessive consumption of alcohol and cigarette is harmful for human being, we have to limit it and find different ways to discourage people who exaggerate it.

Topic: Internet, a New Technology in Africa

About technology, Africa is far behind the rest of the world. In many African countries, less than two percent has very few telephone lines compared with other countries. In fact there is only about a few lines for every 100 Africans. For example, in my country(Cameroon) especially in rural area, most people do not know much about internet. I reached hear in the USA in 2006 before starting knowing what internet was. Before reaching in this country, I had never touched a computer keyboard. At the begining, I was frustrated because everything has to be done on the computer and I had very poor skills on it.
So as there is lacking of internet technology in Africa, there are fewer internet users there than the only city of Dallas alone. The lack of telephones and computers in Africa may not seem like an important problem on a continent with many serious problems. However, more telephones lines and computers would allow more Africans to connect to internet. Through the internet, African could have better access to information and better contact with the rest of the world. In this way they could end their dependence on other and begin to take control of their own development.
In some developed countries in Africa continent, few people are already using the internet. However, there are often problems with the quality and speed of the satellite connection to the internet. Too poor, may Africans are unable to buy a home computer ; so, they can go to "cybercafes" and pay for computer use by hour. The cybercafes are especially popular with young people in my country today. They use internet to get contact with other people from other countries.
Today, the internet is also an important resource for students. school and college libraries often do not have many books . With the internet, students can access libraries and many websites around the world. They can also sign up for and follow distance learning courses at many universities in the developed countries. On useful websites like "http://www.tolearnenglish.com", many students in Cameroon can easily learn English and other languages through the internet.
Soner or later, the development and the prosperity of many Africans countries will pass through the internet that is why it is now a priority to develop that new technology.

Topic: Problems Of Ecological Environment In Cameroon(central Africa)

Cameroon is a country in central Africa between Nigeria, Democratic republic of Congo, Tchad, Gabon and Republic of Guinea. It is vast, expansive, and sparsely populated. Geographically, it consists of ten provinces and covers about 75.000 squarer kilometers. Is population is estimated of about 2o millions.
Although Cameroon is economically undeveloped, it plays an important role in economic and social development in central Africa. In the one hand Cameroon is a crucial base of power and natural resources in the sub region. With many falls of its various rivers it produces hydraulic electricity which is sold all over the country and in neighboring countries. On the other hand, Cameroon is rich in fauna and flora resources and the major habitat far Cameroon's many rare wildlife species. Therefore protecting its ecological environment is of vital significance not only to some provinces, but also to social and economic development of the whole country. However, because of the fragility of its ecological environment, plus improper activities in the the long past the ecological environment of Cameroon has been seriously damaged. This damage is clearly demonstrated in the aggravation of the water resource crisis, degraded ecological function of forests, constant degradation of grassland, increasing severity of land desertification, and dramatic destruction in the number of wildlife animals and plants.
Due to population increase, expansion in urbanization, rapid economic development and all kinds of unreasonable human activities, the vast area of vegetation in the some provinces has been damaged, leading to continual aggravation and desertification, causing ever increasing harm. Today, the incessantly aggravation land degradation causes as continual reduction in utilizable resources which are already lacking in south province.
Since the government hasn't taken appropriate measures to protect animals and plants resources, my country today faces a dramatic catastrophe situation. Rare species like lions elephants , gazelles antelopes and many kinds of forest essence have been dangerously destroy by human being.
Because of the excessive pursuit of short -term economic benefits, overgrazing and overloading in the the western province have posed serious problems, causing continual grassland degradation , continual decrease in grassland quality. Soil erosion and agricultural activities have constantly modified the land . I doubt if by the year 2080, people will steal survive in my country.

Topic: Becoming Older

Human existence is shorter than trees' life . Experience has shown that as people get older, they usually begin to have physical problems. They sometimes begin to lose their eyesight, their hearing, their memory and become less able to move around. Getting older is a fact of life and there is nothing we can do to stop the years from passing. In Africa and in other poor countries where the life expectation is shorter than the one in other countries, getting older is a problem to be taken serious. Usually at the age of 60, human cells and bones become week. The person will no longer have possibility to earn his life since he will no longer have easy job apart of working harder in farm, under sun and rain. Some of those people become abandoned to themselves since their sons went in towns and other cities to find a good job. Those parents without help face many problems among which starvation and health are the most common. In countries facing war, they are condemned to die if international organizations don't help them. My father always told me that when he was young people lived longer than nowadays. He said that his grand father had lived more than 130 years but today, it is difficult to see a 95 years old person in my country. In America, aged people do not have much problems. When they were young, they saved enough money in their social account so that by the time they are retired, they will not faced much problems. So they will not be abandoned to themselves, they will move to the health care center where they will look after them.
Getting older is a social problem in human life. So we need to think deeply about it when we are still young. We have to work and save enough money to prevent our future b
y the time we get older.

Topic: About my education/Career

Having a good job in the United States of America depends on which level of education a person has. Generally, uneducated people don't have opportunity to have a good job. They must work very hard and their salary is sometime very low. Some career do not provide enough job. Either you are qualify or not you will not have opportunity to be hired easily. In those circumstances, it is indispensable to have a good education, that is why I decided to take English classes and other courses so that by the time I graduate, I will have a good job. By the way, I intend doing medical career. So, after mastering EOSL, I am taking English 1301 class and latter, Biology, Chemistry and Maths classes in order to apply attending to nursing training college. Medical career is so nice because, in the USA, nurses, doctors or therapist practitioners are in high demand and they cannot miss a job.
Although Africans medical workers are poor, neglected and very bad paid in the society, they are prominent people in America. In future because of the high rate of mortality and the decrease of life expectation, Africans and other poor countries leaders must understand that human life is so precious and should be protected. In this perspective, they should stop spending billion of dollar every year to purchase nuclear weapons in order to create unnecessary war around the world. They should think smartly liked Americans, Europeans and other wealthier countries to promote, encourage and develop medical infrastructure in their countries. In this way, medical workers' conditions should be taken in consideration. Their salaries should be equally paid like army and police officers' salaries. Therefore, young Africans will be interested working in medical field. They will not more dreaming to go in foreign countries have medical treatment whenever they are sick. All leaders and other prominent people will stop traveling in Europe, America or in Asia with their family in order to have medical treatment.
Since medical career is so nice in America, I suggest that any American or inhabitant of the USA who intends to make a lot of money can start right away thinking deeply about doing in medical field.

It is grown in many countries in the world, especially in China, Thailand, Japan, Europe, and in South America. It is one of the most commercialized crop because of its high demand. It is sold in every country around the world.
Rice can be found in supermarkets, stores, and in restaurants when it is already cooked. I like eating rice for lunch and sometimes for diner. It is the most energetic food I know because it produces more calories than other food. There are many easy way to cook it: it can be cooked in oil with water, salt, tomato, butter and other ingredients. They can also just cooked it with water and then eaten with tomato soup, bread, beans, vegetable and other kind of soup.
Rice is the most helpful food in the world. It is the common food distributed in poor countries, countries facing war, natural disasters or countries that are in emergency situation.
Rice is my favorite food because it is less expensive, easy to cook and also because while eating it, I feel more comfortable. So I recommend to everyone to enjoy and promote the consumption of rice.

Assignment: Write a 10 sentence paragraph using no simple sentences

Title: Wining Elections in Poor Countries

Corruption is one of the real cause of poverty and many countries in Africa are concerned. When the result appears, the ruling party must surely win since it has manipulated the vote. In many countries, the civil war often occurs due to the fact that the government has not respected other people's opinion. As the illegal voted president corrupted the army and the other forces of law, all political leaders who do not respect the law should be severely punished. At once the illegal president takes the power, he could steal the money and other country's property like he wants and keep in foreign countries. In Africa, most presidents like to died in power because they are afraid to be judged by their predecessors for all what they have committed if they lose the election.

Topic: King uses many images and figures of speech as he relates his story. Find a few lines that you think are particularly well written. Analyze what techniques he uses ( for example exaggeration, metaphor, word play) and explain how you respond.

- That year my brother David Jumped ahead to the fourth grade and I was pulled out of school entirely.

In this paragraph, the author uses metaphorical expressions: Jumped ahead to the fourth grade does not means he ran and jumped, but it simply means that his brother moved from the third level to the fourth level.
I was pull out of school: this is another metaphorical expression. King does not mean that he was removed or dismiss from school, but it means that he dropped the school because of his sickness.
- Most of that year I spent either in bed or house-bound. I read my way through approximately six tons of comic books, progressed to Tom swift and Dave Dawson.
Here the author, King is exaggerating: Reading approximately six tons of comics books in one year is not possible; the author wants to say that he read a lot of book that year.

Hello dear Avit. How are you doing? I saw the first draft of your first college paper and it is not too bad. Anyway, you have some additional information to consider. Writing the
first draft of a paper can sometimes be difficult in the way of organizing it. It may not be perfect, It will not be a surprise to hear Lamott declaring that " the first draft is a child's draft where you let it pour out and then let it ramp all over the place".
In any paper, the first draft may not be very perfect. For some readers, it can look a messy stuff, but it doesn't matter. While writing his paper, a student should not have to worry enough about editing. The first step consists to do a research about his topic. Read article or magazine relative to the theme; take note on important supporting details. On his note book, brainstorming all what is relative to the topic is the second step. So while clustering, write all words or phrases which are relevant to your essay, let flow all ideas and regroup them. You should eliminate as well those which are not useful or less important. As you have your ideas on the note book, you will reorder, rearrange and develop them in order to construct good sentences. The next step should consists to start your introduction stating the main point that should be develop in the body and then write a concluding paragraph. It is not necessary to be very concern about editing yourself the first draft of your paper. Sentence organization and grammar structure are not a great deal because you will have to peer review it with another classmate before writing the second draft.
In conclusion, like Lamott said about the first draft of an essay or paper, it can look like a real "child draft". All ideas can be spread all over and badly organized. It can look like a messy paragraph, but the objective is not being out of the topic. All correction and revision should be done in the second draft.
